Item Details

Can you imagine life without sponges? Historically, sponges came from the sea and most from the Mediterranean. In the middle of the Victorian age, sponges were found off the coast of Florida and harvested in great numbers for use in Europe. Tarpon Springs and areas near the Bahamas became the world exporter of sponges. They were hooked from the bottom with long-handled rakes, dried, beaten clean and bleached. This harvest, done by hand, insured that the sponge beds would continue to produce. Sponges of all sizes were in great demand for household use, in baths and kitchens but they were also widely used in surgery and had industrial uses insulating certain kinds of machinery. British pottery factories used sponges by the ton to create the smooth edges of dishes and bowls and pitchers.
